If you have watched American TikTok food videos, you have probably seen colourful iced drinks in cups with a windmill logo. That is Dutch Bros, one of the fastest-growing coffee chains in the US. There are no UK shops, but here is what Dutch Bros is, what people order and why it has such a loyal following.
From a pushcart to a national chain
Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon, by brothers Dane and Travis Boersma. They started with a pushcart selling espresso. The “Dutch” in the name comes from the family’s Dutch heritage, which is also why the logo is a windmill. The logo has been redesigned over the years; this short history of the Dutch Bros windmill logo shows how it changed.
How it differs from UK coffee chains
Most Dutch Bros shops are drive-thrus or small walk-up stands, not sit-down cafes. The menu leans sweet and playful, much closer to a milkshake bar than a traditional espresso bar. The staff, called broistas, are famous for chatting with every customer.

What people order
- Golden Eagle: a vanilla and caramel breve (made with half-and-half), the chain’s best-known drink.
- Rebel: a house energy drink mixed with fruit flavours, served iced or blended.
- Seasonal lattes: limited drinks that change through the year.
One recent favourite is the cookie butter latte, made with espresso, cookie butter flavour, a cookie butter swirl and milk, topped with Soft Top foam and a drizzle. It is rich, at around 500 calories for a small, so it is a treat rather than a daily cup. You can read the full cookie butter latte breakdown for sizes, calories and caffeine.
How much does it cost?
Prices vary by state, but Dutch Bros is generally cheaper than Starbucks in US price comparisons. A medium Americano was $3.25 in one July 2026 test in Texas. If you are planning a US trip, a full list of drinks and prices is available at dutchbrosmenu-us.org.
Tips for UK visitors
- Sizes are bigger than UK chains; a small hot drink is 12 oz.
- Tipping is expected in the US, usually $1 to $2 per drink.
- Ask for a recommendation; broistas will happily suggest a combination.
Dutch Bros currently operates only in the US, so for now it remains a must-try stop on any American road trip.
